目前太陽光電的主流應用市場在於市電併網型應用，而太陽光電的主流技術為矽晶圓式，矽晶圓式太陽能電池佔了所有太陽能電池九成以上的市佔率。相較於矽晶圓式太陽能電池，薄膜太陽能電池雖然市佔率仍偏低，但具備有以下特點：
1.輕量(weight)
重量輕，使用在建築物上時可減輕建築物負擔。
2.可製成可撓式(flexibility)
容易與其他產品整合、可在非平面(如球型屋頂、弧形玻璃帷幕)上應用。
